Just a bunch of geeky dads

Oops! (Sorry!)

If you received an email (seemingly) from me between 1AM and 3:30AM (US Central) this morning (Thursday) , please disregard it.

I'm not sure what happened (GMail attack? Virus?) , but it appears to be pretty wide-spread (I have gotten several similar emails from other GMail contacts this week) , but relatively harmless. Hopefully your SpamFilter "caught" it , or this message made it to you before you wasted any time clicking through the errant send.

Again...sorry!

:-)

  • On to the first section I'd like to talk about with the book, Do One Green Thing. We've talked about using water bottles in the past, yet reading Mindy Pennybacker's book showed me a couple of salient points I've missed in my reading. Do you want to know what those points are? Why not listen in... I'm enjoying this book so far. Enough to highlight parts of them and share them with you guys.

  • 12 Mile Taper Run

    See the activity on RunSaturday
    Type:Run - Long Run
    Duration:1:58:04
    Distance:12.29 mi

12 Miles of Taper. All is well.

Left quad still tight, but loosened up nicely. By the end of this 12, I was ready to be done, not "chomping at the bit" , ready for more, as sometimes happens at this point of the training / taper. Oh well. This was a (comparatively) late in the day run, after a big lunch, so I'm not overly concerned with that.

Thought about rocking this one, trying for MP throughout, but the wind was crazy-strong. I decided that the more reasonable approach would be to run it as-prescribed, seeing if I could keep my HR within an appropriate zone for this type of run. I had much better luck with this endeavor this time. I ran without my road ID dog tag, which I think helped... My 1 "reasonable" reading was the only time I ran without it, so I wanted to give it another shot. I haven't found anything online about dog tags interfering with / jacking up HRM readings, but mine seems to. Hmm... Regardless, much more pleased with the readings and how they related to both my pace and "feel." For the last 200M or so, I all-out sprinted up a slight incline to test my "Max HR." Probably not the best idea, especially after 12 miles of "reasonable" running as planned, but...well, I just wanted to see. Got it up to 180 in just that short span. Which makes me think that the age-formula 186 is NOT my max...

All-in-all, GREAT run. Didn't feel like a sub-4 hr marathon run, but then again,it's still not supposed to at this point, right...?

Had a fantastic exhange with another runner dude while waiting at a stop light. This was an intersection far away from anything notable, residential or business-wise. We were each alarmed to see another fuel-belted Garmin blazing runner sharing the same strip of curb.

    Dude: How far ya goin'?
Me: Huh? (pushes 'pause' on iPod)
    Dude: How far ya gonin'?
    Me: 12...how about you?
    Dude: 12 too!
    Me: Are you tapering?
    Dude: Yup! (laughs)
(light changes, dude runs run way, I run another)
Me: You running on May 1st?
Dude: Yup! Doing the full...how about you?
Me: Yup...doing the full as well. Good luck!
    Dude: YEAH! You, too! (thumbs-up)

Love love LOVE the fact that there's a MARATHON in my hometown. I love being able to train on roads that I'll eventually race on. LOVE that I can have these middle-of-nowhere exhanges with city-mates of mine sharing the same endeavor. Amazing. After this marathon, when I bitch about how cold it was training in Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar, and how much more "reasonable" training for the half would be for me next year...this will be in the back of my mind. I couldn't imagine having this exhange and having my answer be "I'm running the half." (or Relay, 5k...) I'll probably still rant about the cold, my hatred of the treadmill, etc to anybody who will listen. BUT, as long as there's a marathon in my hometown, I'ma run it.

  • It's time to start the review of the book, Do One Green Thing. Tonight I'm gonna give you some background about why we're going to trust this particular author... and what I'm hoping to achieve with this long book report. I'm also going to give you guys a new way to let me know what you're thinking. Shout out to Kreg Steppe and Chuck Tomasi of Technorama for the idea...
